Delayed cord clamp and Placenta

In previous posts I touched lightly on Delay Cord Clamping and the Placenta. In this post I’ll will talk deeper into the topic because I think it a highly recommended to educate yourself so that when it comes time to make decisions you can feel confident and make the right decision that can potentially be life saving for you, your children for now and in the far future.

From the moment of conception (even years before) every decision you make has an impact on the future health of yourself and your baby. You must become fierce, unwavering, educated and depend on no one for your family’s well being.

“With most deliveries, the cord blood is taken to be sold, because it contains valuable stem cells, including hematopoietic cells. These are sold for scientific research. Before this highly lucrative market developed, the blood was allowed to travel to the infant to help him become stronger. Instead, it is now stolen from him by the hospital staff. Early cord clamping restricts blood that was intended for the infant. There is usually about a cup of blood transferred through the umbilical cord to the infant at birth. A huge number of studies show that early cord clamping is a dangerous procedure, which weakens a newborn, and can eventually lead to brain and lung problems (if not immediately). If the umbilical cord is attached, and the infant is receiving the highly-oxygenated blood, then there is not an urgency to immediately get the infant breathing. The oxygen from the blood will ensure the survival of the infant. Parents usually have no clue that the blood of their child is being taken for research, and this is not accidental. Parents usually sign the fine print allowing their hospital to “dispose” of the cord blood and placenta, which is actually saved, and then sold to the highest bidder. The cord blood of pre-term infants contains more stem cells than normal infants, and interestingly; early cord clamping is particularly promoted for these infants by the medical establishment, due to its higher market value. The welfare of the child is not even considered. For the hospital, this blood is a premium sales item because it contains more nutrients and stem cells than are normal. These are desperately needed by the weaker infants. This need is ignored, and the cord blood is literally stolen from the sickly child (by his own doctors — no less), and then sold for maximum profit. There is no doubt that this cord blood would result in much healthier premature newborns.” -T. Corriher

“Another thing very injurious to the child, is the tying and cutting of the navel string too soon; which should always be left till the child has not only repeatedly breathed but till all pulsation in the cord ceases. As otherwise the child is much weaker than it ought to be, a portion of the blood being left in the placenta, which ought to have been in the child.” — Erasmus Darwin, Zoonomia, 1801

“Hospital policies encourage American doctors to always intervene in the birthing process, for the sake of making it as fast and profitable as possible. Thus, American doctors typically seek excuses to intervene, and unnecessary interventions are always dangerous. United States has the second worst newborn death rate in the developed world. The U.S. also has the highest maternal mortality rates.” – S. Corriher

Doctors’ practice of cord clamping too soon may cause brain damage, cerebral palsy and autism.

“Anti-ageing stem-cell injections composed of umbilical cord blood – £8,500. Consultations cost £150 per hour and take place in London’s Wimpole Street with Dr Robert Trossell.”

“Please keep in mind that there is not a single hospital birth protocol that does not interfere with love. Induction, pitocin, epidural, episiotomy, c-section, violent and unnecessary clamping and cutting of the umbilical cord, separating mother and baby at birth, sticking poisonous needles in our baby’s body and burning ointment in their eyes, wrapping our babies so tight in a blanket that they cannot move and cannot make skin-to-skin contact with their mother, circumcision — every single one of these technological interventions will effectuate a breakdown in human love. “

Please take a moment to research the benefits of delayed cord clamping and seriously consider it for the health of your newborn.

Also research the benefits of consuming your own placenta for your own health and rapid recovery.

My list of important topics to research before going into labor.

Below is a list of research topics I found important to consider before childbirth.

Lots of pictures for your easy to read enjoyment!

I would recommend watching the following documentary “Pregnant in America”. The documentary can be found on Netflix or below is a link from Youtube.

Although I found this film to be overly dramatic for my taste with a bit of fear mongering at the end. The majority of the film does have a lot of good information and interviews (only reason I recommend it) that makes up for their choices at the end the film.

Suggested Research!

This blog post is just to get topics out there, you can further research on your own and make an informed decision.

  • Midwife or midwives delivered babies way before women went to hospitals or obstetricians. Men did not attend births during Colonial times (1700s), as it was considered indecent. “1900: Less than 5 percent of women gave birth in hospitals. 1920: Dr. Joseph DeLee, author of the most frequently used obstetric textbook of the time, argued that childbirth is a pathologic process from which few escape “damage”. To avoid this specialist obstetricians should sedate women at the onset of labor, allow the cervix to dilate, give ether during the second stage of labor, cut an episiotomy, deliver the baby with forceps, extract the placenta, give medications for the uterus to contract and repair the episiotomy. By 1921: Thirty percent to 50 percent of women gave birth in hospitals.

Giving birth on your own? Everything Birth is a great place to get your  supplies! I’ll give a list of recommendations in the future.

  • Doula is a nonmedical person who assists a person before, during, and/or after childbirth, as well as her spouse and/or family, by providing physical assistance and emotional support.

  • Anti-ric or routine infant circumcision has no benefits like some doctors say, end of story. The history behind circumcision is a religious, the foreskin has the most nerve ending by its removal it reduces sensation. The process is seen as a sacrifice of “sinful” human enjoyment.

  • Vernix Casesosa is waxy or cheese-like white substance found coating the skin of newborn human babies. It serves to conserve heat and protect the delicate newborn skin from environmental stress. Vernix is also thought to have an antibacterial effect, a physical barrier from bacterias. The rule of thumb is that the first bath occurs after the umbilical cord stump falls off on its own, usually 1-2 weeks.

  • Eye Ointment “goop” applied an hour after birth is generally either erythromycin or tetracycline (both antibiotics), or the older silver nitrate solution. “In a sense, the skin of newborn infants is like freshly tilled soil that is awaiting seeds for planting — in this case bacterial communities,” said Fierer of CU-Boulder’s ecology and evolutionary biology department. “The microbial communities that cluster on newborns essentially act as their first inoculation. If a mother is known to be disease-free, there seems little reason to administer any ointment at all.” ON or Pink eye/ conjunctivitis can be cured with breast milk, end of story.

  • Placenta – Is essentially the baby’s “Second Heart” after birth it allows the baby to continue to receive oxygen and nutrients until the baby is ready to expand his/her lungs via “the first cry”. I recommend telling your doctor/midwife to assist you in touching your placenta and umbilical cord. Your body made these organs, its not gross. The umbilical cord is made of the toughest material that it needs the sharpest scalpel to cut.

  • First Cry When all is well your baby will cry on their own, no spanking needed.

  • Coconut oil– One of the most amazing substances available in this planet. Always have a good amount of Organic, Extra Virgin, Unrefined, Gluten Free, with Lauric acid, Cold Press Coconut Oil on hand. I’ll create a post on some uses soon!

  • Lactation consultant  There’s a lot of wonderful blogs out there about breastfeeding or you can visit La Leche League. I figured my way around breastfeeding with some research on latching techniques and saying my mantra “My baby and I will figure out breastfeeding together”.

  • Cloth diapering– We went with the homemade all-in-one and baby grew out of those in two weeks so we opted for the Thristies cover, Indian pre-fold and snappie format from Nurtured Family. Feel free to explore your options here.

  • Kangaroo care is when APGARs is done in the mother’s arms, the baby can be rubbed clean & dry, and will usually attempt to breastfeed on his own soon after birth.

  • Atlas vertebrate-“…the practice of a doctor pulling during delivery with 50-70 pounds of force into the infant’s head from the birth canal and instruments like forceps and vacuum extraction can lead to a variety of different birth injuries. C-sections can also be very traumatic as the baby is pulled out of a small incision. So much so that women are told things like “yes your baby fractured their clavicle during the birth process, but that is normal.”What?! What is normal about a fracture during birth? It may be common…but that doesn’t make it normal.”

This blog is dedicated to resources I’ve collected and/or created to prepare for at home delivery,  my pregnancy and birthing was “unassisted”. I say “unassisted” as in there was no medical intervention, but my husband took an equally active role in bringing our son into this world.

This blog is specifically dedicate to the women who are considering or have All Ready decided they want to birth their babies on their own. This is in no way to convince a woman to birth unassisted, that is a choice made because deep down inside women carry that primal knowing. As a mother and an independent thinking spirit that decision is completely up to you…ALWAYS. Also to those heros that walk side by side with empowered women.

To go forward with natural birth, in your core you have to know what is best for your baby and family. In your core you have complete faith in yourself, that cannot be hindered by fear or the fear of others. In your core you have complete trust in your body, an intelligent machine, that can bring life into this world. The same trust that you have in it to breathe, circulate blood, heal, cleanse, and live completely on its own without micro managing the process.

It is my wish that I can share the wisdom and knowledge of my experience to help guide you through the most amazing and empowering path for you and your family.

From one mom to another.

In honor of my beloved without whom I would not have never been given this opportunity to experience a love that cannot be put into words nor described. You believed in me when no one else did. You’ve given me a life and family that I cherish, a happiness I wish to share so that all others too can experience.
